Tipper Trucks on Site: A Practical Guide for Contractors

Tipper Trucks

WNR 10 m³ tipper trucks on a Gauteng site

Every earthworks job is, at some point, a haulage job. Soil comes out of a cut and has to go into a fill, spoil has to leave the working area, and gravel or aggregate has to reach the layer works. Tipper trucks do that work, and how well they are planned often decides how productive the excavators are.

What a tipper truck does

A tipper truck carries loose material in a body that lifts hydraulically to tip the load out at the back. On a construction, mining or quarry site that makes it the link between the machine that loads and the place the material needs to go. Typical uses:

  • Cut-to-fill earthworks: moving material from high ground to low ground on the same site
  • Spoil removal: carrying excavated material away from the working area
  • Material delivery around site: fill, gravel and aggregate to where layers are being built

WNR’s tippers have 10 m³ bodies, are licensed and roadworthy for public roads, and always come with an operator.

Matching tippers to your loading machine

The most common mistake is too few or too many trucks. Too few, and the excavator stands waiting. Too many, and trucks queue at the loading point. To get the balance right, think about:

  • Loading time: how quickly the excavator or wheel loader fills one truck
  • Haul distance and road condition: a longer or rougher haul means each truck takes longer per cycle
  • Tipping and return: time to tip, spread and get back in line

Divide the full cycle time of one truck by the time it takes to load it, and you have a rough idea of how many trucks keep the loader busy. Our team can help you work through it for your site.

Haul roads matter

Tippers are only as fast as the road they run on. Keep haul roads graded and drained, and control dust with a water truck, especially on long dry-season runs. A grader and water truck on the haul road often pay for themselves in tipper cycle times and safety.

Choosing the right material plan

Different materials behave differently in a tipper body. Wet clay sticks and may need more time to tip cleanly. Rock and blasted material are heavy and hard on the body, so loads should be placed carefully rather than dropped from height. Dry, loose fill is quick to load but creates dust on the haul road. Tell us what you’re moving so the hire suits the material.

Safety around tippers

Tipper trucks work close to excavators, people and other plant, so:

  • Agree clear loading, tipping and turning areas
  • Keep pedestrians out of reversing zones
  • Tip on firm, level ground, never on soft edges
  • Make sure everyone knows the site’s traffic plan

Our trucks are checked and maintained before they go out, and our operators are experienced, certified, competent and medically fit. On site, they work within your safety plan and alongside the safety officers you appoint.

Tipper hire as part of a package

Tippers rarely work alone. On an earthworks, civils, mining or quarry job they work alongside excavators or a wheel loader, with graders and rollers following. Hiring the loading and hauling plant from one supplier means one enquiry, one set of operators and coordinated start dates. Our own lowbeds deliver the loading machines to site.

Planning your tipper rental

Before you ask for a quote, have ready:

  1. Site location and access conditions
  2. Material type and roughly how much needs to move
  3. Approximate haul distance on site
  4. Required start date and expected hire duration
  5. The loading machine you’ll use, or whether you need one too

WNR offers 10 m³ tipper truck hire in Gauteng from our base in Roodepoort, all across the province.
